169.254.x.x addresses are reserved by RFC 3927 for uses in relation to "Dynamic Configuration of IPv4 Link-Local Addresses".

Hi all. I get the strange "internet" connection listed on my firewall log with 169.254.something/255.255.0.0 every time I but the pc into hibernation. When it wakes up there it is. My solution, because I distrust connections I cannot control, was to deactivate hibernation. Never happened again.
Good luck to you all

I got a little confused by my 1st run in with a 169.254/16 address. In my case it's due to zeroconf routes (Bonjour) used in Skype. I'm wondering what the other causes behind the169.254/16 addresses are. For example I always just assumed that a 169.254/16 address was only indicative of zero config. networking and by chance I stumbled across this and found that it can also reflect a connectivity or DHCP drop. Anyone aware of any other causes behind a 16.254/16? Thanks

In the second last paragraph, the link titled "Network Client Assigned 169.154 Address" leads to "Idiot’s Guide to Unit Testing", which appears to have nothing to do with IP addressing.

People use their credit cards on their machines. I think his letter was crisp, to the point, and born of fear. Nonetheless, that doesn't make you responsible for one iota of reasoning on his behalf.

Simply tell him that he is grotesquely mistaken, and perhaps suggest that he obtain the advice of a degreed technician.

Yes, could be that rather than the browser. Either way it's the same phenomenon.

Some ISP's have a "transparent proxy" that leads most DNS errors to their default search page. Sometimes the even send you to the top result if the match is close enough (like the "I'm feeling lucky" button on Google).
Could it be something like that causing the confusion?
